Fourth of July Beach Smokey Marmalade and Life Lesson #11

Oh I so don't keep up well with blogging...I do believe though that I am at about Life Lesson #11....I know I'm awfully close to that. No pictures today...ha...no one wants to see the dark flecks of char in my marmalade....but the Life Lesson learned is rich, and that I will share with you all as well as this gorgeousmous recipe for Beryl's Marmalade. Beryl is the Mother of my friend and she currently is a retired gem living in New Zealand. Here's the recipe...oh the Life Lesson? well it's never quit stirring...my daughter and I and her hubby are enjoying a peaceful Fourth of July American Holiday at our little beach place...we've been most content and have had a grand time thus far in spite of ever so slightly scorching our first batch of Marmalade...this is how we did it....my daughter knows I have terrible troubles with my feet...well we cut up all our stuff, got our Marmalade cooking away and then she decides to rub my feet...oh ecstasy! Oh my it felt so good...we had asked her dear sweet hubby to stir every ten minutes and me forgetting that near the end you must stir more than that...well she's rubbing my feet, hubby is nose in the computer absorbed in a new furniture daydream and quite suddenly I smelled burn...well shoot if we didn't just sit there like fools and let it scorch on the bottom of the pan...life lesson...no foot rubbing whilst making Marmalade! Otherwise the batch was so perfect...so completely perfectly perfect. Okay so no ecstasy foot rubbing until the Marmalade is in the jars! So we're going back to get more of those perfect oranges, no seeds, the perfect grapefruit again no seeds and more sugar....so here's the recipe...

Beryl's Marmalade
2 pounds of orange, lemon, grapefruit or more if you wish.
We used an entire bag of wonderful Florida Naval Oranges, seedless and 1 grapefruit, again Florida and seedless, and 1 lemon....we cut the whole mess up into 1/4 inch dice. Then you put it in a very large, deep and heavy bottomed pan if you have it...and bring to a boil...you boil for 1 hour, (this was where we messed up with the foot rubbing....twas near the end) then add about 7 pounds of sugar and bring to the boil again and boil for 40 minutes. Is this simple or what? Yes if you're not getting a foot massage! Now once it's boiled for 40 minutes, it should be like thick syrup dripping off a wooden spoon, ladle into hot sterilized jars and seal with hot sterilized lids and rings....
Should make about 12 jars, those tiny jelly jars of Marmalade and it's really and truly delicious...so was the foot rub by the way.

What a wonderful year this has been with the hard work of Dulany (and Pat), and all others who have contributed to this blog. Keeping up to date with the lives of classmates makes one feel as if they have never left the halls of SHS. Although many of us are thousands of miles from Springfield, it is just a click away on the computer to remember our younger years. I hope that everyone has a great Holiday, and keeps in touch.

Bob's eulogy by Sandy Turner

Bob was one of our people, and his h.s. years were very, very, important to his earthly evolution ... more so than anyone else I know. I sat at the same table with him and Roland at our 40th and listened to them reminisce with affection and humor in picture-perfect detail--amazing! His h.s. times, his Vietnam experiences, close friends, football, fishing and his faith were in Bob's soul. He met his deamons head on, and slayed his dragons. He would want no less for every man than what he strived for himself and he made it his mission to help others toward their goals. He has passed the ball, and will, no doubt, be charging right along side us as we sprint down the field amid the cheering stadium crowd. Bob has made his touchdown!!

This is Bob and Bettie Richards at the Reunion Dinner 2009. I'm so glad Bob made the effort to come, it was Herculean for him as he was mid chemotherapy and I doubt he shared that with everyone. Bob and I were friends from at least the sixth grade on. He used to walk me home with Sam Thomas, we'd leave Sam at Circle Drive and proceed down Hood St, me stopping off at my house then he'd go on down and round the corner to Stanton. Back when we had gym class there was a big curtain separating the girls and boys sides. We often square danced and they would pull back that curtain letting the boys go ask the girls to dance. Bob always made a bee line to me, no matter how hard I tried to hide from him because I really wanted to dance with Jack Mitchon. But I always danced with Bob. I have no idea what year this was, I remember I liked Jack in 3rd grade so it could've been back then, I haven't a clue, my memory cells don't reach quite that far into the depths. Later on in junior high school I tried out for cheerleading and we had to do that running jump where you touch your toes to the back of your head...well I over shot and landed about four or five rows up in the bleachers right in Bob and Art Handshy's laps. I have no idea why but Ole Irv Smith gave the boys whacks for that...they saved me so I never did understand that. Somehow I was voted onto the cheerleading squad. I can't imagine why. I know that I was the captain of the squad and Tom was captain of the basketball team and for some reason we sat next to each other on the bench...love in bloom you know? Later on Bob defended me in high school when the football team would harass me about dating a Feitshans boy, it was Bob and Bill Martin who would save me then. And much later on when Tom and I married and lived full time in North Carolina it was Bob and Bettie where we would stay on the long trip home. They came to North Carolina to see us too.
Bob was so blessed to find Bettie, she is an absolute jewel and I know that he adored her.
I'm going to miss Bob...I know we've lost quite a few classmates, but this is one that really feels painful to me.

Roland Burke Receives Another Posthumous Honor

On Sunday, October 25, a memorial park bench was dedicated to Roland's memory on the grounds of the Ethical Society in St. Louis where he belonged and was active on two boards and in many study groups. The bench was built from scratch by a dear friend of ours, and he set it in a woodsy area and planted a dogwood tree and several butterfly bushes around it. The plaque set into the concrete pad reads "In Fond Memory of Roland Burke, June 10, 1946 - August 6, 2009". It is especially meaningful to me since Roland chose to be cremated, and there is no headstone to commemorate his life. This will be a lasting memorial in a place and setting he loved. The ceremony was attended by many members of the Ethical Society, and several spoke of their memories of Roland, and his ethics and service philosophy. It was a beautiful day. Roland would have loved this memorial and the dedication ceremony.

The Georgian revisited

Hi Dulany,
Love the old "Georgian" memorabilia. I spent a lot of money in there at 2:00 in the morning after getting off from a rock'n'roll gig with Johnny and the Cyclones and/or the Holidays.
The menu particularly, has brought back a lot of images.
This ashtray has been in my collection since ten years ago when I inherited it.
The paint is still good. I just threw it on my scanner. (I wish I'd washed all the ashes out first)

I got married during my England fellowship and am surprisingly still married. I have two kids, son (27) and daughter (22). My claim to fame is being on the cover of the Chicago magazine last year (Jan '08) as a "Top Doc". "

KEVIN COX'S BRUSH WITH FAME & FORTUNE

Believe it or not, one of our own has run with the high rollers. Yes, Kevin Cox is a "Friend of Governor Blagovich"! It seems that back in December of 2003, Kevin played for Blago's Holiday Gala Fundraiser in Marion, Illinois. Little did he know that fame and potential fortune would come his way. Kevin received a gift from Rod, and reports that it's never been out of the box since that night (except, of course, for the picture above). Now he's wondering what he could sell it for on eBay (if he were a member). I guess he could ask Rod to post it for him, since he's obviously a seasoned eBayer (I'm sure you saw his post for our new President's Senate seat.)And to think we knew Kevin when!

Here's all you have to do: Weigh yourself in the morning, note the date and your weight (no, you'll never have to share that) and the morning of the reunion, weigh in again and figure the percentage of your original weight that you've lost. No wonder so many SHS gals are turning into southern belles. Patsy Moore lives in Baton Rouge permanently, and Nancy Kother Dillon and Bill live in Destin more than half the year. Well now you can see why. It's a beautiful place. Patsy goes over to visit, and sent these shots back. They promised to drink a toast to me, and as you can see, they never miss the chance. Nancy says their door is always open for visitors.

Gals Night Out Christmas Party

Those of us from SHS'64 who could make it donned our holiday outfits and met at Fritz's for a Christmas get-together, arranged by Nancy (Kother) Dillon. The food was great. We had a great time laughing and talking for hours. Patsy Moore had just sent pictures of the "sneaux" in Baton Rouge, so we toasted her and passed her pictures. Since many of the ladies go to Florida for the winter, we won't have another official party until May, when Gail Grant Record will host at her house. In the meantime, there's a rumor that there will be a Black & Red Gala at the PCCC this winter. Hopefully the info will be available soon.

If anyone would like to try to name all the ladies there (not all of them made it into the group shot) i'd appreciate it.

ANNUAL trip to Chicago (6th year)

I was hosting a party a couple of years ago (4th of July) and Wanda (Brandt Keil), Pam and Diane (John Cohn's wife) and myself (Linda Campbell Groves), after a few good adult drinks, decided we needed to go to Chicago to shop around the Christmas season, so we got out the calendar and decided on 10th of December to travel by train to Chicago. Wanda and myself catch the 6:30a.m. train out of Springfield, but Pam and Diane live in Litchfield so they catch the train in Carlinville and they are already on the train when we get on at 6:30a.m. We all meet in the club car for the ride to Chicago. It is early, but we all have fun talking and having coffee (Bailey's Irish Cream too). We catch a taxi and go to our hotel room and we open up a bottle of red wine and do our toast to our trip. We then go to Catch 35 for lunch and then off to shop and then find a nice place for dinner and then top off our evening at Trump's Tower for a nightcap drink and back to our hotel for the night. We didn't get back to our hotel until midnight, so that is pretty good for "old" women isn't it? The next morning we find a place for breakfast and we are off for the sights of Chicago. This year was the aquarium, but each year we do something different. One year we saw a play and another year went to the Museum for King Tut's display. We have a drink around 3:00p.m. and head for the train station and catch the 5:15 train for home. We have had such a good time and we have the pictures to prove it too. The snow did fall for us also, so we were happy girls. Here are some pictures for everyone to see. Next year (God willing) we will be in Chicago again around the 10th for another enjoyable trip.

I just received the following forward from Will Howarth, blogmaster for the class of 58.

Hello 58s,

Ron Wilson has brought to our attention that there are two groups at Springfield High School who are in the process of trying to raise enough funds so that they can participate in two different significant events in Washington D.C. If you still have the State Journal Register from Tuesday, November 25, 2008, you can read the entire article about these projects.

The first group is the Marching Band. They have submitted their application and are waiting to hear by December 10th if they have been chosen to participate in the Inauguration Day parade in Washington in January.

The second is a group of 44 students with the Springfield High School Choir Scarlet Harmony and the Singing Seven and the Senators and their goal is to travel to Washington, D.C. to join the University of Wisconsin at Eau Clair to perform at the Kennedy Center in honor of Abraham Lincoln's bicentennial birthday in February. This group is the only group from Illinois that has been chosen to participate in the Abraham Lincoln bicentennial birthday events in Washington D.C.

Both groups are holding fund raising events as well as soliciting donations. Since we have some remaining Reunion monies in our coffers, what would you think about donating a sum to each group to help them out? We would donate to the band if they are indeed chosen to go and definitely donate to the choral group, as they have already have a definite invitation.

Will you let me know right away what your vote would be for these projects?

On the Friday after Thanksgiving Bill and Janie Rast, Phil Hinrichs and his brother Stephen, and Roland and Connie Burke met at Saputos for a mini-reunion. As usual, we talked long after finishing our dinner. It's always great catching up.

You asked what we'd like to see? I for one, and i am not alone, would like to see you get the credit you deserve. This is a great service to everyone from SHS64. None of my other friends has managed to stay in touch with more than 1 or 2 high school friends after 40+ years, but i know more about most of you now than i ever did in high school. One of our teachers told Roland that he would never forget our class - we were one of the best on record - and we still are!

Everyone, please contribute at the link so we can keep this going. It's easy. Dulany has been doing this single-handedly (Patti helps some too) and bears most of the cost. (and evidently sleep-deprivation is included!) If you enjoy this site, help him out.

His name came up recently in an SHS64 email group, and Becky Cochran did some research and came up with a wonderful article about him and his art work. He makes fantastic bronze sculptures, and is in Bloomington at ISU.

CLASSMATES CATCH UP OVER CATCH OF THE DAY

Bill Rast and wife Janie (since 2000! Congrats!) got together with the Burkes at Red Lobster 10/19 and gabbed for quite a while. Many trips down memory lane (while we still have a little memory left!) Bill brought his Capitoline. You'll all get a chance to meet Janie at the 45th reunion - yet another reason to come. She's delightful - beside her obvious beauty, she's charming and very funny. She's become a regular email buddy of mine.

Gabbing & Guzzling at Gabatoni's

Becky (McClure) and Tom Cochran blew into town from Dubai, so we did what we do best - we gathered as many as we can find for some fun. We met on a Saturday night at Gabatoni's for gabbing and guzzling, and stayed reminiscing for 4-1/2 hours! It was a blast. The Burke Alaska Honeymoon!

Hi, all!

We're back from Alaska, and it was wonderful! First the cruise up the inland waterway, then a few days in Denali, and on up to visit my cousin and family in Fairbanks. Here are a few pictures.

We started in Vancouver after a visit with my college roommate. Our first stop was Ketchikan, where we took a jet boat ride to the surrounding islands (and as you can see from the picture, Roland checked out the red light district) Next we went to Juneau where we helicoptered to a glacier for a dog sled ride, and later paddled a 12 person canoe out to a glacier and beautiful waterfall. Our last port stop was Skagway, where we took the narrow gauge train up to the Yukon Territory. We docked in Whittier and were bused to Anchorage where we rented a car and continued up to Denali. There we went white water rafting and horseback riding on the tundra. From Denali we drove on up to Fairbanks to visit my cousin and his family for several days. While there we saw all the sites and took a canoe ride. Roland and Rob ran the 10k Midnight Sun Run on the summer solstice, and the rest of us walked it (via a shortcut!) On our way back to Anchorage we dropped my cousin off near the Copper River where he caught his annual 30 salmon. He came down to Springfield for the 4th and brought lots of lox.

We're back in the regular groove now, but are ready to party with all our SHS'64 buddies, so watch for an invitation. Wanda is offering her help and her house. Be there!

A Surprise Wedding Shower

Every few months, the local SHS '64 gals get together for food and fun. This month Nancy (Kother) Dillon hosted, and it turned out to be a surprise wedding shower for Connie Case, complete with food, decorations, cake, wine, and even gifts! We had a ball - especially me. As if the party wasn't surprise enough, there was a huge sack from Chicos (my favorite) with a complete 5 piece travelers outfit and matching earrings, with a card signed by all present and even a few long distance signatures. The ladies even sent Roland a signed travel book for the Alaska honeymoon. What a bunch of great ladies! Thanks again for the great party - first shower i've ever had. I'll never forget it.

After lusting after one of Gary's pieces for 3 years, Roland and Connie finally bought it and hung it in their St. Louis gallery - the first of many Gary Groves originals. If you haven't seen his artwork, you should. We've toured his studio, and the rest of his home is wall to wall pictures. We have our eyes on several, so you'd better hurry.

April 12, 2008 Venice, Italy

Hi Mates, I'm just busy feeding the pigeons here in Venice today, they were all over me, on my head, up and down my arms, standing on my toes.....such fun, gentle little creatures.

You can buy small bags of shelled corn for 1 euro from a vender, the pigeons are very well fed, lots of folks feed them and do just like we did, shreak with either laughter or fright.

We started out the day with a fairly heavy rain and ended with a lovely sunny day. We had traditional Carbonara for lunch followed by a rich chocolate/ice cream dessert. I doubt we want much dinner. I bought tomato, pepper and cippolino onion seeds in the market along with some really unusal pastas, now to sneak those home for this summer. We found a couple of neat Pinocchio masks and a lovely gondola sunset painting for treats to bring back. We bid arriverderci to our Italian "to be son in law" and are busy resting before we enjoy an evening walk back along Piazza San Marco. Ciao for now.

Zayed University 2007

This is Zayed University's quad. Our son took this last fall during his visit with us. Tom was offered another five year contract this time (we already have had five years here) and thus far he has turned it down. He says he misses his grandchildren, we're due to come home in 1 1/2 years but expect to stretch that to three.

Zayed U is a four year liberal arts university still in it's infancy, committed to National women only. Folks like Tom teach them how to do it the way Westerners do it. They are now expanding to a military college as well under their umbrella but it is totally separate from the women. This particular campus is brand new, and a new campus is being built in Abu Dhabi as well, Tom has been a part of all of that work. I am very proud of him, though he's so busy I don't get to see too much of him. Luckily I have a wealth of international friends, my quilting and my old school chums to keep me occupied. I've added this note from our trip to Venice as I wait for my guide to arrive from Riccione. Our daughter's beau. He's an IT guy and would love to be at this conference with Tom, instead he is taking me on a tour of Venice.

I noted Gary Williams said he lives in Thailand, wish we had known that when we visited last year, we would've looked him up. Though as we all know Tom doesn't remember folks too well, right Rich?

SPRINGFIELD - Pauline E. Hinrichs, 86, of Springfield died at 9:40 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2008, in Springfield.
She was born in Forrest, on Oct. 7, 1921, the daughter of Fred and Pearl (Baur) Alstadt. She married James Brucker Hinrichs; he preceded her in death in 1973. She also was preceded in death by two brothers, David and Fred Alstadt; and a sister, Lucille.
She was an apartment manager.
She is survived by two sons, Phillip M. Hinrichs of Dayton, Ohio, and Steven J. Hinrichs of Rochester.
Visitation will be from 9:30 until time of services at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2008, at Ellinger-Kunz & Park Funeral Home, 530 N. Fifth St. David Upchurch will be officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Note: The funeral was very nice. Phil and brother Steven both gave wonderful reminiscent talks about growing up with Pauline and their father. Following interment at Oak Ridge, a luncheon was held at Rochester Christian Church.

Cards to Phil can go to his address in the 40th Reunion booklet. His email is correct there too.

Here is a picture of two more SHS grads who "re-found" each other after many years. Joyce Lawson from our great class and Jay Kessinger (Class of '65) remet just a few years ago (with a little help from our Patsy Moore!) and have been happily married for 2+ years now. This is a picture of them at Estes Park, CO - one of their favorite places. They live in a northern suburb of Denver. (Great place to visit!) Congratulations you two! Welcome to the club of reconnected SHS grads! You know we must be great - we keep coming back to each other.

Sriners Celebrate 40 Years!

Mr. and Mrs. Dulany F. Sriner of Springfield will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on Easter Sunday with a family dinner.
A trip is planned for later in the spring.
Sriner and the former Patti Saladino were married March 23, 1968, at St. John’s Lutheran Church by the Rev. William Roth.
Mr. Sriner is self-employed at The House Doctor and is a photographer for DSDigitals.com. Mrs. Sriner is a secretary for the Illinois Secretary of State Archives’ Record Management Department. They are parents of two daughters, Krystal (husband, Steven) Oh of Plainfield and Kim Sriner of Carbondale. There is one grandson, Joshua Oh.

A WET DAY ON LAKE SPRINGFIELD

Classmate Rich Berning is known for his generosity in taking friends out on Lake Springfield on his pontoon boat, but what happens if they get caught across the lake in a downpour? No worries! Rich and Carolyn have a stock of towels and robes and a dryer for the wet clothes. Not to mention a fully stocked bar - for purposes of warming up, of course. The following picture shows how well this system works. L to R: Kathie (Kubish) Wozniak, John Cohn, Wanda (Brandt) Keil, Rich, Linda (Campbell) and Gary Groves. They don't appear to be in any pain, do they? And do I note a glint in the male eyes?? That's our class, friends!! Gotta love 'em!

Welcome & house cleaning

As you can see, we have another new author on the site. Welcome Charlie. There are still several who have received invites but who for whatever reason have not set up their passwords and log ins. If you are having problems, let me or one of the other bloggers know and we will try to walk you through the process.

Change of rules: Originally, I set this up by request of several who wanted to be able to share pictures. After some thought, I think I will change the picture requirement rather than just ignore it. I think it is important to have a place where we can just share ideas even if we don't have pictures to share or don't feel computer savvy enough yet to be able to post them. Also, Connie had some pictures of her son and family just back from service over seas. By the original rules, she could only post the picture with her in it.

So, the new rules will include general interest posts even without pictures and pictures should be of or about classmates and their families. It still isn't a repository for the family vacation shots but pictures of the family on vacation are OK. How does that sound?

Be sure to share the site with fellow class mates AND HELP them set up their account. Some are obviously having problems.

I also found that it works if you share your invite with others. When they sign up, they are simply grouped with you. That tells me where they got their invite.

Remember, even if you don't have author status yet, you can participate by commenting on the posts.

Found this blog site by chance yesterday, and am thrilled to see that we have some way to keep in touch.

After completing 31 years as an educator, I am now retired and living part-time in Arizona (Phoenix), and the rest of the time in Michigan (Glen Arbor). Good to get out of the midwest during the cold weather.

Nice to read the info. about those in the Class of "64. Good job, Dulany!!

Cliff Tozer revisited

Last summer, I had an article on the primary blog http://shsclassof64.blogspot.com/ on Mr Tozer. Last week there was an article passed around about him. I suggested it be placed on this blog for all to see and somehow I ended up with it to post. I'm not sure why. I think we all respected Mr. Tozer this just gives us more insight. If you click on the article at left, it will open in a new window big enough to read.

We have had 2 incidences of spam on this Blog. For that reason, I have activated the word verification option. When you make a comment, you will see a strange looking group of letters to copy into a box. This prevents computer generated spam. If this does not stop the spam. I will set up the moderation option where everything has to go through me before it is posted. I prefer not to do that but the spam is not always harmless. Both incidences were not comments but were links to click. Once you click, you might become vulnerable to some kind of hacking. If all else fails, I'll turn off the comments and you will need a password to make any regular posts and comments will be eliminated.

Hey, you fellow SHS-64's (my gosh - that will soon be our AGE as well as our grad year! Ouch!)

Becky McClure Cochran, Patsy Moore, Bud Roberts and I have been sharing old pictures, and we thought it would be a riot to post them so everyone could see them. We know you all have some old pics that you could scan and do the same. It's so great to share old memories. The four of us have been having a blast.

Here's my first offering - actually it's pre-SHS, but you all know and remember this clown!! He's always at the reunions. Speaking of which - one more year!!

Over the past several years, I have provided both a website and a blog for Springfield High School class of 64 graduates. I have asked for comments and pictures which I have then posted as time permitted. There were occasions that pictures were held for a more appropriate time. Being at that age when brain cells are dying faster than they are reproducing, I have sometimes lost or forgotten to place the posts. I was recently approached by several members of our class who would like to be able to post pictures themselves and this new site was born. I will set it up and monitor it but the primary postings will come from guest authors. If you would like to be a member of this prestigious group, send me an e-mail at housdoctor@housdoctor.com I will send you an invitation to be an author on the site. I have planted the seed. It will be up to you to see that it grows. Once the seeds sprout, I'll provide a link from both the current blog and the website. Watch out net, the class of 64 is on the move!
